⚠️ Update 2026-07-29 (annotations #1 and #2 at the bottom) — the premise has moved twice since filing. Two additions from operator input: Google's Open Knowledge Format (Option D), and the observation that ADRs should be hierarchical like concepts — which produced the strongest measurement in this Discussion and Option E. Read annotation #2 first: the hierarchy already exists, it is just not represented.

Three named defects now:

  1. 0029-harness-docking-design.md is named after the wrong subsystem. Docking lives in src/dashboard/ — 13,778 LOC across 29 modules, a Body-layer framework concern consumed by apps/workstation, examples/dashboard/dock, and prospectively agentos. "Harness" is the Electron/agent-harness. With no index, the filename is the only navigation aid, so a wrong filename is a retrieval failure rather than a cosmetic one.
  2. It is a book. 63KB in one file. The operator's phrasing is the requirement: "if you need to look into perspectives, you don't want to read a full book."
  3. The corpus has a dense relation graph that exists only as prose. 37/37 ADRs cite another ADR; 215 occurrences of amends / supersedes / successor / companion vocabulary. The hierarchy is already there and is not represented anywhere machine-readable.

The authority these violate is our own — ADR 0006, and it is only half-built

0006 (ADRs as Graph-Queryable Entities) promoted ADRs to first-class graph-queryable entities, ingested deterministically as ADR nodes. Its §1 root cause: ADR authority existed but "was NOT graph-visible … future-agent V-B-A had no graph-queryable authority target."

Two gaps follow, and defect 3 is the larger one:

  • Granularity. 0006 gave document-level nodes and nothing bounds document size, so a query for "what governs dock perspectives?" returns a 63KB node.
  • Edges.0006 gave us ADR nodes; nobody gave us ADR edges. An agent can query which ADR exists, but not what superseded it, what amends it, or what its companion is — despite 215 prose assertions of exactly those relations. That is the same "no graph-queryable authority target" failure 0006 set out to fix, solved halfway.

Both are stronger, internally-anchored claims than "0029 violates the Map/Atlas convention," which applies a skill convention to ADRs by analogy (see OQ2).

The reframe worth arguing about: our ADRs are living authority, not a decision log

The ADR tradition (Nygard, MADR) treats records as immutable, append-only, numbered history — you do not move or renumber; you supersede. Flat numbering is a feature of that model.

Our ADRs do not behave that way. §critical_gates mandates "No AiConfig work without reading ADR-0019 first"; a live ticket cites "ADR 0029 §2.8.6" as a binding constraint on current work. These are consulted as live authority substrate, not read as history. So the flat immutable numbering is inherited from a model we no longer follow, while the usage demands navigability and relation structure. That mismatch, rather than file size, may be the root cause — and it is what makes hierarchy a legitimate question instead of a violation of ADR convention.

Precedent sweep (§2.2)

MADR — the established ADR standard

MADR v4.0.0 (2024-09-17): ships full and minimal templates — depth is a per-decision choice rather than one shape for all. Community guidance prefers bite-sized records. Since MADR 3.0.0, "Architectural" became "Any" Decision Record, a deliberate naming correction relevant to defect 1. March 2026: YADR — YAML ADRs, "processed by tools much easier," pointing at 0006's machine-queryability goal. Two places OKF is deliberately the inverse of us: it refuses typed relationships ("what kind of relationship… is conveyed by the surrounding prose, not the link syntax") and mandates broken-link tolerance. Sequencing note

Splitting 0029 before an ADR-wide convention exists invents a one-off shape the convention may contradict — shape must precede split. But renaming a mis-scoped ADR and adding a missing index are correct under every option, so C can proceed independently.

  7. STEP_BACK from a non-author family running the §5.2 8-point sweep — mandatory: modifies learn/agentos/ durable content layout, touches docs, lint, and graph ingestion.
  8. §6.2 family-keyed quorum — ≥2 active families signalling, ≥1 non-author family [GRADUATION_APPROVED].
