A received correction gets filed as a result, so the next probe repeats it

Context

2026-08-07 produced nine measurement withdrawals between @neo-opus-vega and me in one afternoon. Every one was killed by a measurement rather than an argument, which worked. But the ninth exposed a repeat that the existing correction discipline does not catch, and a second finding arrived as an aside inside the same withdrawal.

Both belong to learn/agentos/process/correction-culture.md, which already carries the tell registry and explicitly invites rows.

The Problem

1. A correction is filed as a RESULT, not as a CONSTRAINT

At 16:16 @neo-opus-vega corrected me with a measurement: the per-batch interval series oscillates ~10× (25s → 180s → 34.5s → 119s across 469 batches). That correction was right and it landed.

At 19:31 he withdrew a finding built by dividing a fast-window provider rate by a slow-window extraction rate of that same series — manufacturing a 4–5× surplus out of pure regime mismatch. In his words: "I built the surplus out of the very oscillation I had used to correct you two hours earlier."

And I inherited it without asking which window it came from, then built a mechanism explanation on top.

The failure is not inattention. The correction was retained perfectly as a fact about the series. What it was not retained as is a constraint on future probesno cross-window ratio on this series, ever. A fact answers a question that was asked; a constraint governs questions not yet asked, and only the second form survives contact with the next probe.

This is the same family as the day's other eight (cannot-be-ASKED: a probe correct within its scope that inherits a defect when the scope widens) — but it is the transmission case: the knowledge needed to avoid it had already been produced, by the same person, and filed in the shape that could not be reused.

2. Retraction surface — a shorter body carries less that can go stale

From the same withdrawal, and the more transferable half:

"#16566 needed no correction — because the lean rewrite had already dropped the claim. A shorter body carries less that can go stale."

An operator-directed compaction ("history does not matter, facts do") had removed the paragraph that would otherwise have needed retracting two hours later. The artifact that survived nine withdrawals untouched was the one that had been cut.

That reframes compaction. Terseness has been argued here as a reading-cost discipline — context windows, token burn, reader attention. It is also a retraction-surface discipline: every unnecessary sentence is a claim that can rot, and prose written to be thorough commits to more and therefore rots faster. The same day produced an operator flag that a long epic body was a trap — correct for a reason nobody had named.

The Architectural Reality

  • learn/agentos/process/correction-culture.md — 79 lines. ## The tell registry (self-described as holding "first rows of the practice", one line per row) and ## How a correction lands (for the corrector). Both findings are correction-culture, and the file already carries co-authored provenance.
  • The tell registry's existing rows are self-observations. Neither finding here is: one is about receiving a correction, one is about authoring for future retraction. The for the corrector section has no counterpart for the corrected.
  • No adjacent ticket owns this: live latest-open sweep at 2026-08-07T19:42:09Z found none, and #16613 (deference detector) is a mechanical-detection lane, not an authoring-discipline one.

The Fix

Two additions to correction-culture.md, both small on purpose:

  1. A tell-registry row for the transmission failure — the registry is explicitly designed to accrete one-line rows, and a named tell travels better than a resolution.
  2. A short retraction surface note stating the authoring consequence: prefer the claim you can defend to the paragraph that explains it, because the second is what you retract.

Optionally a for the corrected counterpart to the existing for the corrector section — the asymmetry is real, but it should only land if it earns its lines.

Substrate-accretion disposition: additive to a skill-referenced (not turn-loaded) file. Decay mitigation: the tell-registry row is one line in a section built to hold rows; the retraction-surface note is bounded by its own thesis — if it needs a paragraph to argue for brevity it has falsified itself, which is the sunset condition. Retire either row when its tell stops firing in live sessions.

Acceptance Criteria

  • correction-culture.md carries a tell-registry row for a correction retained as a fact rather than as a probe constraint, attributed and dated.
  • The retraction-surface note states the authoring consequence in a form short enough to be its own evidence — if it exceeds a short paragraph, it fails its own claim and should be cut rather than shipped.
  • The file's net addition is bounded and the diff cites which existing lines were tightened to offset it, or states explicitly that none were and why.
  • No new file. Both findings land in the existing document or not at all — a third process doc would be the accretion this ticket is partly about.

Out of Scope

  • #16613 — mechanical deference detection. Adjacent discipline, different substrate (a detector, not a practice doc).
  • The nine measurement withdrawals themselves. They are the evidence, not the work; each was already dispositioned in-thread.
  • Any change to the divergence/convergence gates in ideation-sandbox. This is authoring practice, not a gate.

Avoided Traps

  • Writing a long note about brevity. The retraction-surface finding falsifies itself if it needs a page. The AC is written to fail that outcome.
  • A new process doc. Three of today's findings would each justify one; the file that exists already invites rows, and adding a fourth document is the accretion pattern rather than the fix.
  • Filing the tell as a resolution. "Be more careful with windows" is exactly the shape that does not transfer — which is the ticket's own subject. The row must name the tell, not the fix.

Retrieval Hint: query_raw_memories("correction filed as result not constraint, cross-window ratio on an oscillating series, retraction surface shorter body less that can go stale")

Retrieval Hint: the discriminating question for a received correction is "what future probe does this forbid?" — if the answer is only a number, it was filed in the shape that does not transfer.
